OLD ORCHARD BEACH — The towns of Saco and Old Orchard Beach are sharing a deputy code enforcement officer position.

The Saco City Council discussed the agreement at a workshop Monday. City Administrator Kevin Sutherland said during the budget process staff asked for funding, which was approved, for a part-time code enforcement officer – a new position – after the town of Old Orchard Beach approached the city with a proposal to share the position.

The Old Orchard Beach Town Council approved the arrangement at its Tuesday night meeting. Sutherland said further approval was not needed.

The code enforcement officer will work 40 hours total, splitting their time equally between the two municipalities. The cost of the position, including benefits, will be shared equally between the two communities.

“The terms work out really well for us,” said Sutherland at Monday night’s City Council meeting. Sutherland said it was another way for the city to show collaboration with a neighboring community. The city recently agreed to share an assessor with Biddeford.

Old Orchard Beach Town Manager Larry Mead said the town funded a parttime code enforcement officer position last year and increased the funding this year to pay for 20 hours a week. Tammy Munson, who already works for Old Orchard Beach, will hold the shared position.

In another move of collaboration with a neighboring community, the Old Orchard Beach Town Council approved on Tuesday an agreement for the town of Scarborough to maintain and repair Old Orchard Beach’s fire and rescue fleet.
