AUGUSTA
A recount will begin next week for the 1st Congressional District Republican primary in which two candidates were separated by just 55 votes.
Candidate Ande Smith of North Yarmouth submitted a request last Friday for a recount.
Mark Holbrook of Brunswick, who has declared victory, has said he trusts the state’s numbers.
The winner of the primary will face Democratic U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree in November.
Smith faces no cost for the recount since the margin was so close.
The recount will begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday in Augusta and last for three to four days. Results will be shared on the secretary of state’s website and social media.
Ballots are stored in tamper proof metal containers and closed with specially numbered security seals and locks.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
