BIDDEFORD — Six city lifeguards were issued warnings by police near Fortunes Rocks Beach on Friday night, Biddeford police said in a statement Monday.
Police responded to a report of four people who appeared to be swimming while intoxicated in the area of Beach Avenue. When they arrived, officers made contact with six subjects – three males and three females, all between the ages of 19 and 21– who were identified as Biddeford city lifeguards, police said.
It was not immediately known if the lifeguards were on duty at the time.
No arrests were made, and those involved were issued warnings. Their names have not been released.
Deputy Police Chief JoAnne Fisk on Monday said she did not have any more information about the incident, including whether alcohol was present at the scene, if anyone under legal drinking age had consumed alcohol, or if anyone had consumed alcohol at all.
Carl Walsh, recreation and teen director for Biddeford Recreation, also said he had little knowledge of the incident Monday.
“I’ve heard no more than you (Journal Tribune reporter) at this point,” he said.
