L.L. Bean has purchased the property that last was used as Stirling & Mull restaurant, at 175 Lower Main St. The restaurant closed for business early last winter.

Mac McKeever, L.L. Bean spokesman, confirmed Monday that the company had recently purchased the property, which is close to its corporate headquarters.

“We do not plan to do anything specific with it at this time, but since it abuts our property, it was a sound opportunity that just made good sense,” McKeever said.

Owners Ed and Shana McLean purchased the big building last year and opened it July. They operated a so-called gastropub, serving food with European influences they came to know from their days in the military there. Stirling & Mull opened in July but suffered from slow sales, and the McLeans closed it.

Attempts to contact the McLeans were unsuccessful late Monday and early Tuesday.

L.L. Bean has purchased the property that was home to the Stirling & Mull restaurant in Freeport, which closed last winter.
