YORK COUNTY — ‘Tis the season for barbecues, brews and bursts of light in the sky. Cities and towns across the country will be celebrating the nation’s independence this weekend, and York County is no exception.

This Independence Day weekend is packed with activities from Sanford to Saco:

Biddeford Pool will host fireworks at 9 p.m. Monday at the Biddeford Pool Community Center, 109 Mile Stretch Road. The rain date is the following day, Tuesday.

In Saco on Sunday, fireworks will be displayed at 9:30 p.m. at the Funtown Splashtown USA rear parking lot, 774 Portland Road.

Old Orchard Beach will see a busy weekend, as the Ocean Park Association is hosting a number of family friendly activities in the Ocean Park community. Events are open to the public.

• The 30th Annual Family Sand Sculpture Competition on the Beach will be held from 3-6 p.m. Sunday at the beach near Randall and Ancona avenues. This year’s theme is “Treasures in the Sea.” Judging will begin at 6:15 p.m., and winners will be recognized at Monday’s band concert.

• Fireworks will be held at the beach near downtown at 9:45 p.m. on both Sunday and Monday.

• The 66th Annual Independence Day Parade will be held at 10 a.m. Monday. The parade forms on Temple Avenue near the Bell Tower. A concert by the Ocean Park Band begins at 10:45 a.m. at the Bell Tower.

• Saco Bay Artists will have an art show and sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday on the lawn of the Ocean Park Library, in the Ocean Park square. At 7 p.m. Monday, there will be square dancing at Jakeman Hall, 14 Temple Ave., with caller Ray Hilton.

• A free performance by Maine’s 195th Army National Guard Band will be held at 6 p.m. Monday at the Salvation Army Seaside Pavilion, 8 Sixth St.

Kennebunk and Kennebunkport are hosting a joint fireworks display at Kennebunk Beach at 9 p.m. Monday.

The fireworks are part of Kennebunk’s SummerFest, a three-day event celebrating the town’s past, present and future.

On Saturday, Kennebunk will host a parade steppingoff at 10:30 a.m. on Main Street, with craft vendors, face painting and wagon rides running from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Waterhouse Center. On Wednesday, the Rotary Club is sponsoring a barbecue dinner from 5- 7 p.m. at the Waterhouse Center.

In Sanford, a weekend of festivities marks the city’s Independence Day celebration:

• The party begins at 5:30 p.m. Saturday with a 1980s Party in the Park featuring Bon Jovi tribute band Living on a Bad Name along with well-known local band Boyz Gone Wild performing at Goodall Park on Roberts Street. Tickets are $10 in advance from the Sanford Parks and Recreation Department and $15 at the gate.

• D&L Amusements and food vendors will be open around Number One Pond late Friday afternoon and on Gowen Park Drive beginning Saturday afternoon and continuing through Sunday.

• On Sunday, there will be two acts: Jessi McKinnon & Whitestone Band, and the Northern Attraction Dancers will perform around Number One Pond at 5 p.m., followed by the Maine Attraction Water Ski Show Team at 6 p.m. Fireworks are set to begin at dusk.

Street closings will start at 2 p.m. Sunday in preparation for the evening’s events. Gowen Park Drive will be closed from Main Street to the traffic circle; Front Street will be closed from the entrance to Lyndon Apartment to the traffic circle; Oscar Emery Drive will be closed from Oak Street to the traffic circle; and Summer Street will be closed from Grant Street to Gowen Park Drive.

• An Independence Day parade steps off at 10 a.m. Monday and makes its way down Main Street, winding down at Gowen Park Drive.
