South Portland’s newest brewery and pub, Foulmouthed Brewing, is now open in the city’s Knightville neighborhood. The brewery is offering six of its own brews and two guest taps.

The mid-June opening went well. “We were packed through the weekend,” said co-owner Julie Dilger.

Dilger and her husband, Craig, renovated a former garage at the corner of Ocean and A streets. The business name, Foulmouthed, is a play on the region’s history, when all of greater Portland was known collectively as Falmouth.

The name is also a reference to “the city’s seafaring history and the many salty conversations between sailors on the waterfront,” Dilger said in a prior press release.

She and her husband looked at possible locations in both Portland and South Portland before settling on Knightville.

“We really found what we were looking for in South Portland, and we realized what a great community it is,” Dilger added.

The brewery is open 3-11 p.m. Monday-Friday, and noon-11 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The goal is to add a weekend brunch menu in the next few weeks, Dilger said.

In addition to weekly special events –such as Mug Club Monday; Pints and Purls, a knitting club, on Tuesday; and Knightvillain H3, a running club, on Thursday – the brewery also plans to have a booth at the Beer Festival on July 23 and at the Belgian Beer Fest on Sept. 17. Both events will be held at Thompson’s Point in Portland.

Foulmouthed Brewing is the second brewery to open in South Portland recently.

A new tasting room and brewery, named Fore River Brewing Co., also opened on Huntress Avenue on the northern end of Main Street this past winter where it hopes to become a neighborhood fixture, according to the owners.

In terms of Fouthmouthed Brewing, Dilger said, “The neighbors have been wonderful. I’ve been fortunate enough to meet many of them (and) everyone I’ve talked to seemed enthusiastic about our project.”
