SANFORD — The Maine Public Utilities Commission is hosting an informational meeting at Sanford City Hall Annex at 6 tonight to give FairPoint customers and other residents the opportunity to ask questions about changes in landline telephone service as it pertains to deregulation of Provider of Last Resort services.

The changes come in the wake of a new law passed by the Legislature earlier this year.

Beginning in August, FairPoint customers in 22 of Maine’s most populous towns, including Sanford and Biddeford, will start to see changes in their landline telephone service. The Biddeford meeting is set for 6 p.m. July 28 at City Hall.

Those who aren’t certain whether they are a POLR customer should contact FairPoint at (866) 984-2001 with their name and customer account number. Non- POLR customers and all FairPoint customers outside the 22 named municipalities are not affected.

According to information provided by FairPoint spokeswoman Angelynne Amores, the new law ensures that FairPoint cannot stop providing landline service without the approval and consent from the PUC and the Federal Communications Commission.
