SHAPLEIGH — A 76- year-old Shapleigh man with dementia who drove away from his home early Sunday was found safe several hours later in northern Vermont.
York County Sheriff Bill King late Sunday said Jerome Fecteau was on his way back to Maine with his family.
He had left his Shapleigh home, driving the family’s 2001 Ford Focus at about 5:45 a.m. Sunday.
A couple in Guildhall, Vermont, found Fecteau at the end of their driveway, confused and lost. They took him in and called authorities, according to the sheriff ’s office.
King thanked the couple and Vermont State Police for their involvement in the case.
The sheriff ’s office on Sunday issued a “Silver Alert” for Fecteau. At about 5:30 p.m., King sent out a bulletin that Fecteau had been located in Vermont and that his family members were en route to pick him up. At 10 p.m., King said Fecteau had been reunited with his family.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
