Habitat for Humanity/7 Rivers Maine recently hosted a volunteer team from St. Mary’s Parish of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. The 10- member youth group, that also volunteered last summer, came to Brunswick to work on Habitat’s Education Build at the affiliate’s Hope Lane subdivision.

While they were here the group installed vinyl siding, insulation, dry wall and completed some porch construction. When asked what their Habitat experience meant to them, the volunteers shared that we form an unforgettable bond through this unique experience, the kindness of doing something for someone else is so meaningful, and getting new skills and learning that we can do things on our own is a great feeling of independence.

“Everyone is so busy, for these teens to give up a summer week volunteering to help others is so impressive,” said Sharon Wade, who chaperoned the group along with Mike Curran.

While visiting the coast of Maine, the team also enjoyed time on the water kayaking, tubing, and trying some local seafood.

The group’s stay was supported through donations of meals by area churches, lodging provided by Brunswick United Methodist Church, and access to the shower facilities at the Landing Y.

The team was here as part of Habitat International’s Collegiate Challenge, a year-round alternative break program. To participate, groups of five or more volunteers comprised of students who are sixteen years of age or older choose a Habitat affiliate to work with for a week.

“Through volunteering with Habitat, participants have the chance to learn new skills, connect with new people while visiting a new place, and make a difference in Habitat for Humanity’s work of eliminating substandard housing. Habitat and the community benefit when we have great volunteer teams on-site helping us,” said Habitat Executive Director Mark Primeau.

Located in Topsham, Habitat for Humanity/7 Rivers Maine creates successful homeownership opportunities for families with limited incomes by building sustainable housing and repairing and weatherizing existing homes. The affiliate serves the towns of Brunswick and Harpswell, and all of Lincoln and Sagadahoc Counties. To learn more about your local Habitat visit habitat7rivers.org or call (207) 504-9333.
