AUGUSTA (AP) — Workers completed the replacement of the copper on the Maine Statehouse dome in November 2014. Now they’re nearing completion of replacement of the rest of the building’s roof.

The Kennebec Journal reports that the remaining work includes replacing the rubber roof on the south side of the building, repairing decorative ledges and fixing water and other damage to the House chamber.

Grant Pennoyer, executive director of the Legislative Council, said the total cost for the remaining work is about $677,000. It should be completed in September.

The roof is a synthetic rubber roofing membrane. Pennoyer said typical roofs usually last about 20 years, but they decided to make the roof a little thicker in hopes of reaching 30 years before its next replacement.
