The Amazing Place Adventure Race is coming to Freeport on Aug. 21. The event is sponsored by L.L.Bean, and proceeds will go to help the American Cancer Society of Maine
“I am a huge fan of the Amazing Race so when I heard about the Amazing Place Adventure Race taking place in Freeport this summer, I knew I had to be a part of it,” said participant Suzanne Tefft. “My dad passed away from lung cancer in 2005. In 2009, I was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. This was a shocking diagnosis as I was a young, healthy, life-long non-smoker. Unfortunately, I will never be ‘cured’ of my cancer; rather I am being treated as if I have a chronic disease. I am responding well to a new oral chemotherapy drug — I am feeling great, doing things I love, and living life to the fullest.”
Contestants will be given clues for each challenge as they go, and can win prizes along the way. There’s space for 12 teams, with a maximum of four people per team.
“We’re really so excited to get support from L.L.Bean, because it’s such a pillar of Maine’s business community and history,” said American Cancer Society Event Organizer Dawn Emery. “This event is unique — like no other here. It’ll allow teams to navigate their way through Freeport to complete various challenges — including physical competitions, and tasks that will require your brain-power such as solving puzzles, discovering historical locations, and testing your ability to strategize as a team.”
Each team can sign up for one of five two-hour slots on the day of the event: 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. However, the race will not be timed and no one will be eliminated. All teams who complete the race will receive recognition.
“We’re proud to work with the American Cancer Society, knowing how cancer touches all of us, one way or another,” said L.L.Bean retail event coordinator Laurie Gilman. “As soon as we thought hosting about the Amazing Place Adventure Race with ACS, we knew it was a good partnership that would resonate with many people. At L.L.Bean we’re always looking for fun ways to get people outside, and ways to support our community. It will be a lot of fun to see teams supporting a great cause and engaged in activities exploring our hometown of Freeport.”
Additionally, there will be a Kids Quest Adventure geared toward children. There is no preregistration or set fee for the Kids Quest. Show up between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to participate and make a donation that suits you.
