DENVER — Trevor Story may not be able to help the Colorado Rockies push for the playoffs.
Story could miss the rest of the season with a torn ligament in his left thumb, putting the brakes on his record-setting rookie season and a damper on Colorado’s recent surge in the standings.
An MRI on Monday revealed Story suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament during Saturday’s win over the Mets. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday and said he hopes to have surgery “in the next few days” and that the typical rehab time is eight weeks.
INDIANS: Cleveland will be without All-Star pitcher Danny Salazar for two to three weeks.
Salazar was placed on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow inflammation. An MRI showed no structural damage.
YANKEES: The team plans to leave Alex Rodriguez with reduced playing time as it turns attention to rebuilding.
The 41-year-old lost the designated hitter job last month and has just six at-bats since July 22. He is batting .205.
TIGERS: Former Sea Dogs pitcher Drake Britton was suspended for 50 games after a positive test for amphetamine under baseball’s minor league program.
Britton, a 27-year-old left-hander, made 25 relief appearances for the Boston Red Sox from 2013-14, going 1-1 with a 2.93 ERA. He is 0-3 with a 4.57 ERA this year in 37 appearances for Triple-A Toledo.
DODGERS: Los Angeles optioned Yasiel Puig and Ross Stripling to the minors to make room for its new additions, outfielder Josh Reddick and reliever Jesse Chavez.
The Dodgers were trying to trade Puig before the deadline Monday but couldn’t find a deal.
PADRES: The team designated newly acquired outfielder Hector Olivera for assignment after he came off the restricted list Tuesday following an 82-game domestic violence suspension.
The Padres traded outfielder Matt Kemp and $10.5 million for Olivera on Saturday.
CARDINALS: Shortstop Aledmys Diaz went on the 15-day DL with a broken right thumb after he was hit by a pitch Sunday.
BRAVES: The team placed ace Julio Teheran on the 15-day DL with a strained right lat muscle.
