MOUNT DESERT (AP) — A historic 79-foot schooner participating in the Windjammer Regatta ran aground in Somes Sound with 25 guests onboard.
Members of the Coast Guard patrolling the inlet for the regatta were able to quickly assist the American Eagle after it got stuck off Mount Desert Island around 3:15 p.m. Tuesday.
The crew from the Coast Guard’s station in Southwest Harbor transported guests to safety at a local boat yard. The five crewmembers of the American Eagle remained behind and waited until high tide to refloat the vessel.
No injuries or damage to the schooner were reported.
