SALEM, Mass. (AP) — A Massachusetts man who police say turned himself in for killing his estranged wife has been ordered held without bail.
The Boston Globe reports 50-year-old Douglas Steeves appeared Tuesday in Salem District Court. He’s charged with murder in the strangling of 48-year-old Carmela Saunders in her Salem home.
The Essex District Attorney’s Office said in a statement that Steeves, who is believed to be homeless, confessed to Salem police at about 3:40 a.m. on Tuesday. Officers then went Saunders’ apartment. She was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
The couple married in 1987. Court records show Saunders twice filed for divorce and twice got restraining orders against Steeves. One restraining order was still in effect when Saunders was killed.
It wasn’t immediately clear whether Steeves had a lawyer.
