SACO — Dorothy M. Spears, 91, of School Street, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2016, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House.
She was born in Queens, New York, on March 13, 1925, the daughter of John and Louise Gherke Horstmann. Her father said it was the luckiest Friday the 13th ever.
Dorothy graduated from Andrew Jackson High School in Queens. She then worked for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company during World War II.
She married Robert C. Spears in 1942. They lived in Levittown, New York, and moved to Saco in 1958. She happily resided on Promenade Avenue for 51 years.
Dorothy volunteered for the Girl Scouts of America, the American Cancer Society and the SMMC Woman’s Auxiliary. She most recently volunteered with Fran McDonald for the local Meals on Wheels Program.
She enjoyed walking, dancing, television shows, talking on the phone with her friends, and her weekly Gambling Grandmothers card games. She most enjoyed entertaining and spending time with her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1985 and a brother, Harold Horstmann, in 2012.
She is survived by: two daughters, Gayle D. Young and her husband John of Gorham, and Lois S. Goldthwait and her husband Marshall of Saco; four grandchildren, Jeffrey Young of Gray, Heather Young of Gorham, Ryan Young of Sahuarita, Arizona, and Hillary Goldthwait- Fowles of Saco; 12 greatgrandchildren, Amanda, Mason, Zachary, Chloe, Miller, Brooke, Brinn, Seth, Braedyn, Evan, Dillon and Griffin; and her best friend of 50-plus years, Anita Denton of Saco.
The family would like to thank the staff at Maine Medical Center and Gosnell Memorial Hospice House for the care and compassion Dorothy received.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, at Laurel Hill Cemetery, Deering Park section. A reception will follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Dorothy’s name to: Salvation Army, 2 Church St., Old Orchard Beach, ME 04064, or to: Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, 11 Hunnewell Road, Scarborough, ME 04074.
