STANDISH – This bright and spacious custom home was built in 1994 on a site of local historical significance. Here the Josiah Shaw House, built in 1774, stood, until a lightning-caused fire destroyed it.

Happily, the successor to the Shaw house inherited some of its cool features – for example the antique bricks, beehive oven and marble hearth of the dining room fireplace – and a measure of its vintage character. This is a post-and-beam house, for which a sawmill was set up on the spot.

The result is a home rich in wood, from a Shaw house interior door with hardware, to floors of Southern pine that complement the handsome exposed beams, to the built-in benches and table of the breakfast nook, adding a particularly nice touch.

It’s also a house to please modern tastes. The main level is essentially open-concept. Living room and dining room flow together across the front. The kitchen, which has new flooring and new, stainless appliances (the refrigerator will be purchased by the buyer) has an ell/nook that accesses a back deck 30 feet long. Laundry hookup is in a daylight room off a bonus/sitting room; a full bath is nearby.

And, there’s a first-floor master suite, which has a bath with jetted tub, and a wonderful, walk-in, multi-section cedar closet.

Upstairs, the two large bedrooms and the big office have sweet built-in drawers and shelving (the office has a desk, too). All are served by a huge bath with soaking tub.

The full, partially daylight basement has endless storage and workshop space and a drive-in door for tractor, motorcycle, etc. There are both wood and oil boilers, the latter kicking in if the former runs out of fuel when no one is home.

The home at 20 Blake Road, Standish, is listed for sale at $369,900 by Peter Mason of PoGo Realty in Gorham. For more information or to arrange a private viewing, please contact Peter at 839-3300 ext. 223; 632-8822; or at peter@pogorealty.com.
