HOLYOKE, M.A. — Plenty of offense helped the Sanford Mainers stave off elimination for at least one more night, in an 11-4 victory over the Valley Blue Sox in Holyoke, Massachusetts.
With the win, Sanford forces a winner-take-all game three at Goodall Park, tomorrow night at 6:30 p.m. in Sanford, Maine. The Mainers forced game three by scorching the scoreboard with runs Monday night.
Sanford did most of their offensive damage in two big innings, conjuring nine of their 11 runs in those two frames.
The Moose scored four times in the second inning to take an early 4-0 lead. Chris Gaetano (Monmouth) reached base to begin the inning on a walk, and Sam Stauble (Southern Maine) followed him with a single to put two men aboard. Dan Wilson (North Carolina Asheville) got aboard next on an error in the infield to load the bases, while two batters later, Todd Czinege (Villanova) smacked his first big hit of the ballgame for a double, scoring two runs for an early Mainers lead. Zach Jancarski (Marlyand) also picked up an RBI-single in the inning as the Mainers sent all nine men to the plate.
Sanford struck again for five runs in the sixth, led by Czinege who singled to lead-off the frame. Johnny Slater (Michigan) singled and Jancarski walked after him to load the bases as Shaine Hughes (Monmouth) walked to score a run. Mike Landestoy (Texas Christian) slapped a two-RBI single into the outfield as the Moose continued to pour it on. Then both Sam Stauble (Southern Maine) and Wilson each reached base on a hit, with Wilson’s being a double, and each knocked in a run to give the Mainers their 11-4 lead.
The Moose roughed up Valley starter Greg Jacknewitz (Xavier) in five innings of work, as he allowed six hits, six runs, four earned, three walks and picked up five strike outs in the loss. Sanford put it out of reach when they faced Connor Donovan (Lehigh), collecting four hits, five runs, three earned and one walk in just two-thirds of an inning.
Just two Mainers had multi-hit games as Czinege in the nine-hole had four hits and five at-bats, two doubles, two runs scored and three RBIs. Slater in the leadoff spot went 3-for-6 with three singles and a run scored, as the pair led the Mainers offense.
First pitch is at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday night, with pregame action starting at 6:20 p.m. on the NECBL Broadcast Network as Sanford looks to punch their ticket to the NECBL Championship Series to face-off against the Southern Division Champion Mystic Schooners.
