SACO — Amos A. McCallum, 78, of Saco, passed away peacefully with his family by his side after a brief illness on Monday, Aug. 8, 2016, at Southern Maine Health Care in Biddeford.

He was born in Biddeford on Dec. 21, 1937, the eldest son of G. Amos and Evelyn (Lahey) McCallum. He graduated from Old Orchard Beach High School, Class of 1956, and from the University of Maine with a bachelor’s in education in 1961. He earned his master’s in administration two years later.

Amos met his wife Barbara at the University of Maine, and they were married in 1961.

Amos was employed as a teacher in Plainfield, New Jersey, for two years, leading to 37 years as a teacher and in administration at Kennebunk High School, retiring in 2000. He also coached golf for 28 years in Kennebunk High School.

Amos joined the Biddeford-Saco Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks in 1962, and became active in the local lodge. He went on to serve the Elks on state and national levels. He served on many committees, held a number of offices – including state president – and was national president of the Elks from 2003-04.

During Amos’ term as president, he and Barbara were guests of the Elks in each of the 50 states. At the time of his death, he continued serving the Elks as a state sponsor of Maine and New Hampshire, and was serving on Grand Lodge committees.

He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Saco. His hobbies included playing golf and fishing. Most of all, he loved to spend time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Richard.

He is survived by: his wife of 55 years, Barbara (Hersey) McCallum; two sons, Patrick and his wife Bonny, and Christopher and his wife Jennifer; six grandchildren, Chelsea, Joshua, Lauren, Eric, Sara and Emily; one brother, Glenn and his wife Sheila; and a number of cousins, nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, at Cote Funeral Home, 87 James St., Saco. A funeral service will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, Aug. 12, at Cote Funeral Home Chapel with Father David Robinson officiating. Burial will follow in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Saco.
