BRUNSWICK — Carole Ann Heaphy grew up in Nutley, New Jersey, where, after graduating from high school and business school, she worked as a secretary. She later went off to college at the University of Bridgeport (CT), majoring in French. In her senior year she married Bill Young and began a family. Bill Young died in 1972. Two years later Carole married Bill Heaphy. With three children she moved from Fort Lauderdale to Anchorage, where Bill was stationed with the Air Force. After several more moves and with the children approaching independence, she went back to college, starting from scratch, to earn a four-year nursing degree at Hampton University (VA). She worked for seven years in Virginia as a neonatal intensive care nurse.
With the kids grown and graduated from college, Bill and Carole were free to sell the house, join the Peace Corps, and run off to the far end of Central Asia for two years, which they did. They spent their two Peace Corps years in Kyrgyzstan, a small republic of the former Soviet Union on the Chinese border about 800 miles north of India. They both taught English in the capital city of Bishkek — Carole at the National Pediatric Research Institute and Bill at the Technical University.
Upon arriving back in the United States, they bought a trailer and started wandering across the U.S., visiting their children in Connecticut, Wyoming, and Colorado. Along the way, they were also looking for a place to live, away from the east coast but near saltwater fishing and cross-country skiing. They wound up in Grants Pass, Oregon. Eventually Carole and Bill moved back to the northeast to be closer to their grandchildren and settled in the Brunswick, Maine area in 2004. Carole enjoyed her involvement with the local community including volunteering with the Maine State Music Theatre, the Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program, and various activities with the United Methodist Church of Brunswick.
Carole is survived by her husband William Heaphy, her three children Michele Heaphy (Paul Ferguson), Kristen Wheatley, and Mark Heaphy (Maurine Donahue), her four grandchildren, Nora Heaphy, Owen Heaphy, Eva Heaphy and Quinn Wheatley, as well as her sister Sandy Weaver (Rick Weaver) and niece and nephew, Darcie George and Derek Weaver.
A memorial service will be announced for a later date to be held at the Brunswick Methodist Church, Brunswick. Memories and condolences can be shared at www.brackettfuneralhome.co m. Memorial contributions can be made to the Friends of Kakamega, 51 Hunter Road, Freeport, ME 04032.
