WATERBORO — A surveillance photo that showed a pickup truck shearing off a gas pump at a local market was shared by the store owners on social media Thursday and led to the identification of a suspect less than 24 hours later.

James King, 26, of Waterboro, was issued a felony summons by York County sheriff ’s deputies charging aggravated criminal mischief and leaving the scene of a property damage accident, said Sheriff Bill King in a statement.

James King is scheduled to appear at York County Superior Court in Alfred on Oct. 7.

The mishap took place at Lakeside Market on Route 5 at 12:14 a.m. Thursday, according to store owners Leo and Sandi Binette, who posted still photos of the truck from video surveillance on the store’s Facebook page. The posting was shared 730 times, and an accompanying video was shared 824 times.

“Not only did this vehicle destroy the pump, it knowingly left the property, did not report it, and could have caused much greater damage to our property and the community,” the Binettes said on Facebook.

The couple described a 2002-08 Black Dodge short bed, extended cab pickup truck with broken passenger side tail lights. The truck left the property and headed north on Route 5. The driver was a white male in his 20s, wearing a ball cap.

“Thank you in advance for your help and support,” the couple wrote. “We apologize for the summer inconvenience as this dispenser pump will take much time to replace and reinstall so we will only have 6 fueling stations available at this time.”

Less than 24 hours later, the suspect had been charged.
