In October of 1978 he began working at Bath Iron Works as a pipefitter until retiring in 1997.
Gary took pride in his gardening, growing a variety of fruits and vegetables, as well as award winning pumpkins. While in the Navy working as a skydiving instructor he followed his passion of sky diving in his off duty hours. But nothing compared to the unconditional love he had for his family and especially his grandchildren and greatgrandchildren who called him Papie.

He is pre-deceased by his parents as well as brothers Jim, Dick, Art and Rick Hartley, granddaughter, Dorothy White and grandson Evan Millett.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, brother Charles Hall of West Palm Beach, Florida and sons John Hartley of Jacksonville, Florida and David (Julie) Hartley of Randolph, Maine; daughters, Rebecca Hartley of Bath, Maine and Kelly (Duane) Johnson of West Simsbury, Connecticut, bonus daughters Kathleen Colter of Jacksonville, Florida and Tracy Bunker of Napa, California and bonus son Mark Icangelo of Bowdoinham, Maine, 13 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
At his request there will be no funeral or service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Good Shepherd Food Bank.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
