AUGUSTA (AP) — A Maine lawmaker has resubmitted a bill concerning family member visitation rights that is inspired by the late actor Peter Falk of the TV series “Columbo.”
Arthur Verow, a Brewer Democrat, first introduced the bill after meeting with Catherine Falk, the daughter of the actor.
Catherine Falk became an advocate for family members’ rights after she took legal action to see her father at the end of his life.
Verow says the bill would ensure immediate family members aren’t “needlessly barred” from seeing loved ones in the hospital. He submitted the bill earlier this year, but it wasn’t allowed to progress by the Legislative Council.
Verow says the failure to pass through the Legislative Council was a setback, but he believes it’s worth another try.
Peter Falk died in 2011.
