PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (AP) — New Hampshire Department of Transportation officials say the bridge that connects Portsmouth to Kittery via the U.S. Route 1 bypass malfunctioned over the weekend.
NHDOT spokesman Bill Boynton confirmed that operators of the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge were unable to lift the span all day Sunday. Motor vehicle traffic was unaffected as the bridge was stuck in its down position.
Bridge operators were scheduled to attempt to lift the span Sunday night to allow a boat on the Piscataqua River to leave.
Boynton says transportation officials are unsure whether the bridge would be able to return to its down position. The issue may potentially impact traffic all day today if the problem goes unresolved.
