BRUNSWICK
Pejepscot Historical Society is emphasizing interactive, hands-on activities for its fall program offerings.
The monthly History Happy Hour series, in partnership with the Brunswick Inn, takes place on the second Thursday of the month from 5-7 p.m. at the inn. A $5 cover charge benefits PHS. The Sept. 8 program, “Maine/Main Street Memories,” celebrates PHS’s current exhibit, Maine to Main: Downtown in Brunswick and Topsham. Local poets and Maine/Main Street residents Pam Burr Smith (Brunswick) and Stephen Petroff (Topsham) read poetry related to the connected streets and attendees participate in Maine/Main Street trivia based on the exhibit.
For the Oct. 13 program, Kat Stefko, Bowdoin College’s
Director of the George J. Mitchell Special Collections & Archives, focuses on “Kate Furbish’s Botanical Brunswick.” Bowdoin unveils an exhibit on Furbish and botany this fall, and is publishing a new book of Furbish’s plant and flower drawings. The Nov. 10 History Happy Hour program topic has not yet been announced.
Pejepscot Historical is also offering two hands-on, creative workshops related to the Maine to Main exhibit this fall. On Wednesday, Sept. 13, from 4:30-6:30 p.m., local artist Andrea Heidebrink (andreaheidebrink.com) leads “Pejepscot in Pastels,” a sketching workshop on the Mall across from PHS’s buildings at 159 and 161 Park Row. Participants can sketch the Skolfield-Whittier House or the Mall.
On Wednesday, Oct. 5, from 4:30-6:30 p.m., local photographer/photojournalist Keith Spiro (keithspirophotography.com) heads up “Photographing Maine Street, Then & Now.” Participants will study old photos of Brunswick’s Maine Street, learn tips for taking architectural and landscape photos with any camera, and take modern-day versions along Maine Street to be featured at PHS.
No experience is necessary for either workshop. Both are limited to 15 participants and include materials, wine/beer, and snacks. Pre-registration is required. Cost is $15 for PHS members or $25 general admission. Visit www.pejepscothistorical.org/events for registration information.
Details on additional fall events are forthcoming, including a vintage baseball game on Saturday, Oct. 15, at Crimmins Field in Brunswick, and a Veterans’ Day Weekend celebration at the Joshua L. Chamberlain Museum, Nov. 11-13. Visit pejepscothistorical.org for more details and follow PHS on Facebook and Twitter (@pejepscoths).
