PORTLAND
Nate Freiman drilled a walk-off three-run homer over the Maine Monster and the Sea Dogs (51-76) took the rubber match over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (62-68) by a final score of 10-7 in front of a sellout crowd on Wednesday night at Hadlock Field.
With the game tied 7-7 in the bottom of the ninth, Tzu-Wei Lin led off with a single off of Brady Dragmire (L, 4-6). After a sac bunt by Mauricio Dubon, Aneury Tavarez singled, then Freiman homered to end the game. The homer was Freiman’s 10th of the season. He finished the game 2-for-3 with a homer, double, 4 RBI, two walks, and two runs scored.
Ben Taylor (W, 1-0) earned the win in relief. Taylor worked 1.2 scoreless innings and allowed just one hit.
Dwight Smith Jr. hit an RBI triple to score Richard Urena and start the offense for New Hampshire in the top of the first inning. Rowdy Tellez followed up with a sac fly to put the ‘Cats ahead 2-0 early.
New Hampshire added three runs in the second, but all were unearned due to two Sea Dogs errors.
Kevin McAvoy persevered and earned his seventh quality start. McAvoy allowed six runs (three earned) on eight hits in 6.2 innings, walking one and striking out three.
Trailing 6-3 after six innings, Portland rallied in the seventh inning to take the lead. With the bases loaded and one out, Dubon hit an RBI single to score Tim Roberson, who led off the inning with a walk. Then Tavarez hit a two-run single to score Danny Bethea and Lin and tie the game at six. Ryan Court capped off the rally with an RBI groundout to score Dubon and put Portland ahead 7-6.
Fisher Cats’ starter Shane Dawson allowed six earned runs on seven hits in 6.1 innings with four walks and two strikeouts.
New Hampshire evened up the game in the top of the eighth on an RBI infield single by Ian Parmley off of Taylor.
The Sea Dogs begin their last home series of the year tomorrow night at Hadlock Field against the Trenton Thunder, first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. RHP Mitch Atkins (4-7, 4.66) takes the mound for Portland against RHP Ronald Herrera (10-7, 3.62) for Trenton. Pregame coverage begins on the WPEI U.S. Cellular Sea Dogs Radio Network at 6:40 p.m.
