Teddy Stankiewicz (5-9) fanned a season-high eight batters, and the Portland Sea Dogs ( 54- 81) used a four- run fourth inning, defeating the Reading Fightin Phils (87-50), 6-0, Thursday night at FirstEnergy Stadium.
Stankiewicz scattered four hits, no walks and threw 66 of 99 pitches for strikes. The righty finished the season 5-9 with a 4.71 ERA.
Portland scored in just two innings, plating all six runs off losing pitcher Tyler Viza ( 4- 6). In the fourth inning, all nine batted for Portland, scoring four runs on five hits. Nate Freiman (2-for-4) delivered the first run with a single. Ryan Court ( 2- for- 4, HR, two RBIs) provided an RBI bunt- single and Jake Romanski ( 3- for- 4, two RBIs) added a two-run single.
The Sea Dogs added two urns in the sixth on a solo homer by Court and a run-scoring ground out by Cole Sturgeon.
Taylor Grover worked two perfect innings with three strikeouts, and Ben Taylor stranded the bases loaded in the ninth to preserve the team’s ninth shutout of the season.
The Sea Dogs begin their final series of the season tonight in Manchester, N. H., against the Fisher Cats (Blue Jays affiliate). Jalen Beeks ( 5- 3, 4.33) makes his 13th start of the season for Portland. RHP Jeremy Gabryswski (7-11, 5.26) takes the mound for New Hampshire.
