
The Morse High School boys soccer team opened its season on Tuesday with a 1-0 Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference victory over Lincoln Academy.
With 13:22 left, Shipbuilder Jacob Brochu sent a bending corner kick toward the goal. An Eagles defender caught the would-be goal, resulting in a red card and a penalty kick. Collin McCarthy sent the PK into the cage.
From there, both teams had several chances to score, with Aaron Rodriguez standing out for Lincoln Academy (0-1).
For Morse, 1-0 and slated to host Oceanside on Saturday at 6 p.m., Declan Hall, McCarthy, Dakota Freeman and Dominique Green were standouts on defense.
Morse goaltender Alex Fernald turned aside 21 shots for the shutout.

At Fairfield, Travis Nadeau had two goals and an assist as the Eagles evened their record (1-1) with a KVAC win over Lawrence (0-2).
Cole Kelly, Jason Halliday, James Hutchinson and Jimmy Pelletier added a goal each for Mt. Ararat, with Pelletier and Max Spelke dishing out two assists each. Dalton Streeter also picked up a helper.
Gavin Patterson and Elliot Bowie combined on three saves in the win.
Jackson Dudley tallied the lone goal for Lawrence, with netminder Chris Goulette turning aside 16 shots.
Mt. Ararat visits Cony on Friday at 4 p.m.

Visiting Camden Hills (2- 0) scored two second-half goals for a KVAC win in Brunswick’s home opener.
Scoreless at the half, the Windjammers grabbed a 1-0 lead on a Josiah Krul goal off an assist from Michael Merriam four minutes into the frame.
Camden doubled its lead with seven minutes remaining on an unassisted goal from Will Nickerson.
Brunswick (0-1-1) goaltender Josh Dorr made 11 saves in keeping his team in it, while Lucas Boetsch had six saves for Camden.
The Dragons visit Messalonskee on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

Noah Austin and DJ Douglass came through with second half goals as Lisbon sank Oak Hill in Mountain Valley Conference action in Wales.
The Raiders (1-1) and Greyhounds (1-0-1) were tied 1-1 at the half. Josh Huston posted the first Lisbon goal. Evan Boston scored the lone Oak Hill goal in the first half.
Goalie Marcus Bailey made 21 saves for Oak Hill, while netminder Jonah Sautter turned back six shots to earn the win in net for Lisbon.
The Greyhounds visit Dirigo on Saturday at 10 a.m.
Girls
TOPSHAM — Nikki Bradstreet buried a shot in overtime to lift Mt. Ararat to a 2- 1 KVAC victory over Lawrence.
Kiana Letourneau scored on a penalty kick to give the visiting Bulldogs (1-1) a 1-0 lead.
But, the Eagles (1-1) found the equalizer on an Isabel Burch goal in the second half.
Mt. Ararat is slated to host Cony on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.

The visiting Shipbuilders
pulled away in the second half for a KVAC victory at Newcastle in the opener for both teams.
Morse, 1-0 and slated to visit Oceanside on Friday at 3:30 p.m., jumped on top in the first half on an Emily Martin goal. Amanda Gagne picked up the assist.
Lincoln Academy (0-1) tied the game shortly before halftime on a Tatum Hancock tally.
But, Morse established the territorial advantage in the second half. A throw-in by Hope Faulkingham made its way into the LA goalmouth where Martin outran a defender and punched the ball past the Eagles’ goaltender for a 2-1 Shipbuilders lead.
Morse scored off a corner kick 10 minutes later. Noa Sreden sent a corner to the head of Micailah Albertson for a 3-1 lead.
The defense of Kali Pierce, Emma Gould, Mae Winglass and Faulkingham, along with the goaltending of Marissa Parks (12 saves), made sure that no balls crossed the goal line. The midfield of Sierra Wallace and Sreden ensured that the transition game was effective.
Field hockey
SOUTH PARIS — Katie Watkins and Haley Wakefield each scored a goal as Oxford Hills raced to a 2-0 KVAC win over Mt. Ararat.
Ciara Hamlin had an assist for the Vikings (3-0).
Haley Frizzle turned aside 16 shots for Mt. Ararat (1-2), which hosts Messalonskee on Thursday at 4 p.m.
Anna Huff posted the shutout with two saves.

Bailey Coffin and Alexa Koenig struck for two goals each as the Falcons raced out to a big lead and cruised in a Western Maine Conference win over Cape Elizabeth (0-1).
Freeport, 2-0 and slated to visit North Yarmouth Academy on Saturday at 10 a.m., scored all four of its goals in the opening half.
Kinnon McGrath had 10 saves for the Capers.
Maya Bradbury picked up two assists for Freeport, with goaltender Megan Seymour turning aside 12 shots.

Morse struggled to find a rhythm in falling to the Bulldogs at McMann Field in KVAC action.
Miranda Lambert and Lexi Laverdiere led 2-1 Lawrence with two goals. Katie Kobb and Nora Buck added a goal each in the win, while goaltender Marion Zawtowski was forced to make just two saves.
Morse fell to 1-2 and visits Gardiner on Thursday at 4 p.m.
