BRUNSWICK, Maine — Levi Morant scored the only goal of the first half, and Bowdoin College would go on to add a pair of second-half scores on its way to a 3-0 shutout of the University of England in a non-conference men’s soccer match played Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 7) at Pickard Field.
Morant converted on a header in the 39th minute to give the Polar Bears (1-0) the only scoring they would need for victory. Matty McColl picked up a loose ball and found Morant with a perfectly-placed pass to set-up the goal.
UNE’s defense would hold Bowdoin scoreless after intermission until the 68th minute when a long ball by Wilson MacMillian deflected off a Nor’easter defender into the goal. The Polar Bears completed the scoring 11 minutes later as Moctar Niang headed home a cross from Jack Shultz.
Stevie Van Siclen needed three saves to register career shutout number 16. Reigning Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Defensive Player of the Week Elijah Leverett had four stops for UNE.
The Nor’easters will open their CCC slate Saturday with a 2:30 p.m. match at Western New England University.
