Beverley Tenney Swett, 90, of Westbrook, died Sept. 6, 2016, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, with her family by her side.
She is survived by her eight children: Diane and husband Barry Atwood, of Gorham; Debi and husband Bill Vondras, of Gorham; Cathy and husband Peach Frederick, of Warren; Bob and wife Toni, of Gainesville, Fla.; Bruce and wife Claire, of Omaha, Neb.; Mary Springer of Stuart, Fla.; Patrick and partner Erik Moriel of San Francisco, Calif.; and Becky Shaw of Westbrook. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, as well as her sister-in-law, Jeannette Swett, brother-in-law James Swett, and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Beverley was born to the late Joanna Hood and Albert G. Tenney, on Aug. 12, 1926, in Westbrook, and had two sisters: the late Jacqueline Wallace and the late Delores Verge Hadley. One summer while visiting her favorite place, her mother’s family farm in North Leeds, she met her future husband, the late Lt. Col. Robert A. Swett. Several Army bases, including Germany, Virginia, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Thailand, were home for them and their family.
Beverley was a longtime active member of the former St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Westbrook. Throughout her life she was a Scout leader, taught Catechism, was active with the Family Crisis Services, worked for the U.S. Census Bureau and Barrow’s Greenhouse. For many years, she sold Avon door to door in Portland. She also loved a bargain, with garage sales becoming a favorite hobby.
Above all, her family was the most important thing in her life and she considered her children her “precious jewels.”
Beverley lived the final years of her life at Avita of Stroudwater, in Westbrook. The family would like to thank the staff for the loving care they gave her and also for helping her satisfy her sweet tooth with plenty of chocolate ice cream and occasional Kit Kat bars.
She now lies next to her beloved husband at St. Hyacinth Cemetery in Westbrook.
