SANFORD — Incumbents, some former councilors and some newcomers to municipal politics are considering running for two City Council seats this November.

For the position of mayor, as of Wednesday only incumbent Mayor Tom Cote had taken out nomination papers for the two-year term.

The deadline for candidates to submit nominations with the required signatures of 50 Sanford registered voters is 4:30 p.m. Sept. 26.

So far, incumbents John Tuttle and Victor DiGregorio are looking to be returned to office. Also in the running for council are former councilor Dianne Connolly, former longtime School Committee member Robert Stackpole and newcomers Christopher Signore and Richard Terril. As of Wednesday, only Signore had turned in his nominations and was certified for the ballot.

Those seeking the two School Committee seats, so far, are incumbents John Roux and Scott Sheppard.

Cote is Sanford’s first elected mayor under the new charter that became effective in 2012. Maura Herlihy served one year as an appointed interim mayor before Cote was elected to a three-year term. The term becomes two years with this election cycle.

Tuttle, a former state representative and senator, was elected to the City Council in 2015 for a one-year term under the new charter. DiGregorio was elected in 2014 to complete two years remaining on a three-year term following a re-count in a contest with Connolly, who had served several months of that term, which had been vacated by former Councilor Ken Burgess.

Stackpole, who served for several years on the Sanford School Committee, made a couple of bids for the state Legislature, and in 2007, ran unsuccessfully for a council seat.

DiGregorio, who made a failed legislative bid in 2015, is scheduled for trial Oct. 24 in connection with criminal charges that he attempted to steal public money by lying to the Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices.

The state’s case accuses DiGregorio of lying when he said he had collected the required 60 $5 campaign contributions from constituents in House District 15. Assistant Attorney General Leanne Robbins alleges that DiGregorio did not collect all required qualifying contributions to his campaign and may have paid for some of them with his own funds. He was denied Clean Elections funding.

Incumbent Roger Durant is seeking re-election to the Sanford Water District, while to date, incumbent Kevin Eaton is the sole candidate seeking re-election to the Sanford Sewerage District, where two trustee seats are available.
