The schedule for Dan Cooper’s Brunswick High School football team is brutal over the next three weeks:
Friday, Sept. 23 At Messalonskee (3-0). … Friday, Sept. 30 At Skowhegan (3-0). … Friday, Oct. 7 Home vs. Brewer (3-0).
However, before the Dragons begin what can be described as the Class B North gauntlet, Brunswick had to take care of the Cony Rams on Friday night.
No problems for the Dragons, who scored 20 points in the opening quarter en route to a 58-14 victory, and like teams the Dragons will face over the next three weeks, made it a quartet of squads with matching 3-0 records atop the Class B North standings.
Brunswick hit quickly, with running back Jesse Devereaux sweeping right before pulling up and lofting a pass to wide-open Jackson Gordon for a 62-yard touchdown pass and a 6-0 lead on the Dragons’ second play from scrimmage.
“We wanted to get right after them right from the get-go,” said Cooper of his team’s quick start. “The kids are just confident right now. They wanted to run that play on the first play. They are playing hard and having a ball.”
A lost fumble on Brunswick’s second drive momentarily slowed the hosts, but Corban Teel returned the favor by forcing a fumble that was recovered by Sam Dorval at the C- 46. On the next snap, Hunter Garrett took the hand-off, stiff armed two Ram defenders and pulled away for a 12- 0 lead.
Garrett ran the ball just eight times, but picked up 129 yards and scored twice.
“Hunter has taken the leap of faith and is running hard. We have so many good running backs, so when their number is called they need to shine. Hunter has done that,” said Cooper of Garrett.
“We have had, and have, a logjam at running back, and last year I was unable to play due to injury, but I have come back and put my best foot forward,” said Garrett. “Running behind this line is amazing. They work nonstop.”
The scores kept coming for Brunswick, with quarterback Christian Jensen finding Teel, who beat double coverage for a 61-yard TD catch and run and a 20-0 advantage after a quarter.
On the first play of the second quarter, Devereaux plowed into the end zone. Then Garrett scored on an 11-yard TD run, and Ben Palizay made it 42-0 with 3:57 left until halftime on a 6- yard run to paydirt.
Cony (1-2) quarterback Taylor Heath, who was sacked three times in the opening half, threw to receiver Elijah Dutil for a 19- yard TD pass to get the Rams on the board with 1:56 left in the half, making for a 42-7 game at the break.
The Brunswick backups played the entire second half, with running back Dalton Dickey answering a Cony score (Ashton Cunningham 1-yard run) with a 54-yard sprint to the end zone.
Romil Peck-Moad sent the Dragons’ bench into a frenzy late in regulation when he scored on a 2-run run and completed the game by running in the 2-point conversion.
Cooper now begins the process of preparing his team for the Messalonskee Eagles, who rolled to a 49-7 rout of Hampden Academy on Friday.
“We have to be focused and poised to beat a good team like Messalonskee,” said Cooper. “It is going to be difficult, but these kids have worked their tails off to win all three of these games. We are looking forward to the challenges ahead.”
“As long as we show up, we are going to be great. We are ready for this,” added Garrett.
Palizay finished with 51 yards on the ground, with Devereaux adding 47, all coming in the first half. Jensen threw for 61 yards and ran for another 38. In the second half, Dickey added 83 yards on six carries, while Donald Bromiley rushed three times for 60 yards. In all, the Dragons picked up 422 rushing yards on 38 rushes and tacked on 123 more in the air for 545 total yards.
Defensively, Nelson Gay, Austin Phillips, Devereaux and Gordon had three tackles each.
Heath was 8-of-17 in the air for Cony for 79 yards and a score.
