AUGUSTA (AP) — Augusta City Council will meet this week to discuss Complete Streets, a national model for the design of roadways to suit all potential users and not just motorists.
City Manager William Bridgeo tells The Kennebec Journal that councilors will determine on Thursday whether or not what the city already does is comparable to Complete Streets.
Development director Matt Nazar has argued that Augusta’s policies on roads already mirror many of the components of Complete Streets.
Nazar says Augusta considers all users of a street in the design of improvement projects as well as in the standards that developers are required to follow when building roads.
Officials say roughly 730 entities have adopted Complete Streets policies nationwide. The discussion comes largely at the urging of At- Large Councilor Dale McCormick.
