Sam Gagner’s shootout goal powered the Columbus Blue Jackets to a 3-2 win over the Bruins.

Sonny Milano and Daniel Zaar scored first-period goals for the Blue Jackets, who played their third preseason game in two days.

Curtis McElhinney made 29 saves on 31 shots in 64:30.

Jimmy Hayes and Danton Heinen scored for Boston. Heinen’s goal in the third period tied it 2-2.

Anton Khudobin made 11 saves on 13 shots in 39:55 for the Bruins before being replaced by Zane McIntyre. McIntyre stopped eight shots in the third period and overtime.

The Bruins got some solid results from the next generation of skaters ready to wear the Black and Gold. DeBrusk, Heinen, Brandon Carlo, Jakub Zboril and Austin Czarnik all had very strong games as young players vying for NHL roster spots with a couple of jobs potentially open at the NHL level.

DeBrusk set up Hayes for Boston’s first goal, and Heinen redirected a Carlo point shot past Curtis McElhinney in the third period to tie things up.

The Bruins will get back at it with another home preseason game at TD Garden against the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday night.

“Arguably our best D, if not our best D. (He showed) real good decision-making, and his gaps are good. I can really only think of one time in the third period he kind of threw a puck away in the middle of a change, and ended up on his wrong side,” said Bruins assistant coach Bruce Cassidy of Carlo.

The Bruins loved what they saw of Carlo in a pretty big opportunity right out of the gate this preseason, and now the teenager has set the bar if he wants to keep pushing with a hockey club that needs to upgrade their defense with strong, young players.
