Two people from Washburn have been arrested on felony charges of operating a methamphetamine laboratory, the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency said Tuesday.

MDEA agents charged Robert McKenzie and Crystal Smith, both 22, with Class-A aggravated unlawful operation of a meth lab, a felony.

McKenzie and Smith were stopped Monday by Presque Isle police at the direction of MDEA agents. In the vehicle, police found evidence consistent with the manufacture of the synthetic drug, and suspected the couple were making meth in their apartment at 1294 Main St. in Washburn.

Police secured the apartment for the night and returned with a lab response team Tuesday. Inside they found extensive evidence of a meth lab.

The charges were aggravated because McKenzie has prior drug offenses, and the operation took place in a multi-unit apartment building.

Bail for each was set at $20,000 cash or $100,000 surety. Both were booked into the Aroostook County Jail, police said.
