I seldom write “Letters to the Editor” so to be candid, I even struggled with this one. I chose to write it because Karen Vachon is a very different “politician,” not to say others aren’t, but I experienced her at what can only be described as one of the most emotional times in Scarborough’s recent history. We were on opposite sides of the 50/50 split in this town over allowing a racino. It ripped apart many relationships and some scars still show.
As intense as that issue was, she kept her integrity, honesty and good working relationship with the entire community.
This is exactly why I support her so strongly for re-election this November.
When it comes to electing someone to serve in public office, I seek a person whom I trust. Though I may not always agree with her position, I know that she cares about my thoughts and will listen and has the ability to change a view if presented with more compelling arguments.
I’ve had the opportunity to serve with Karen on the Scarborough Community Chamber Board of Directors. She is a very hardworking, committed and humble servant, full of energy and passion. She is inspiring. She has proven she can “work across party lines.” (I hate that expression because it usually isn’t true, but she truly can.)
I have always found her to be very respectful, upfront, candid and fair. Karen is loyal and committed to our community and is running for the right reasons. In Augusta, she is very hardworking. In her freshman term she had a 100 percent attendance and voting record. Her campaign has been endorsed by the Maine Credit Union League and the NFIB (National Federation of Independent Business).
But most importantly to me, because I have been nose to nose with her and we smiled, she can “work across party lines.”
On Nov. 8, please vote to re-elect Karen Vachon to Maine House District 29.
