TIMES RECORD CONTRIBUTOR AND FORMER STAFF WRITER DOUGLAS MCINTIRE displays his first place Maine Press Association 2016 Better Newspaper Columnist award for Local Columnist at the MPA’s annual conference Saturday in South Portland. McIntire’s column was described by a judge as a “Powerful, personal account and vivid recollection of deceased Navy Squadron. I was in suspense — great storytelling.” The paper was also awarded first place for Best New Revenue Idea for its Leap Day Promotion, where the paper sold gift cards from local retailers. It was described as “the most novel concept in this year’s contest” while “addressing multiple needs with an innovative approach.” Managing Editor John Swinconeck was awarded second place for an editorial on the Brunswick School Board and staff received a second place award for Self Promotion for its redesigned logo. Deputy Managing Editor Alicia Bane won third place for opinion columns on combating racism and on Caitlyn Jenner, and staff received third place for Best Young Reader Idea, “BHS The Orange & Black.”
