All veterans – Durham residents or not – are welcome to bring along a guest for a free supper in their honor on Wednesday, Nov. 9, at the Durham Congregational Church, located at 773 Royalsborough Road.

Boy Scout Troop 145 of Durham is preparing the spaghetti meal, made with homemade sauce and meatballs, and including garlic bread, pies and other desserts. Guests at the supper will be seated from 5-6:30 p.m.

Larry Wagoner, Scout Master of Troop 145, said that this is the third consecutive year that the Boy Scouts have organized the veterans meal, this year two days prior to Veterans Day.

“We all donate something – the parents and the Scouts,” Wagoner said. “It’s to honor and thank our veterans for their service to our country.”

All 16 members of Troop 145 will be involved in the meal. Some will prepare the food, others will set the tables and still others will clean up, Wagoner said.

“We also encourage the Scouts to dine with the veterans,” he said. “It helps them appreciate the sacrifices the veterans make for our country.”

Hunter Howe is the senior patrol leader for Troop 145. Howe said that the two previous veterans suppers put on by the Boy Scouts have been a hit with the veterans.

“I love seeing all the men that have served for our country and having them tell their stories,” Howe said. “My stepdad is a Navy search-and-rescue diver and served for 10 years. I have learned a lot from him and what he did in the military and it truly shocks me what he has done.”|

As senior patrol leader for Troop 145, Howe helps make sure that the younger and older boys are staying on the tasks that they were assigned.

“But I still love hanging out with all the Scouts and doing most of activities,” he said.
