LEWISTON (AP) — Mainers seeking to vote early are running out of time.
Thursday is the deadline for residents to request an absentee ballot and to cast that ballot in person.
The Nov. 3 deadline is aimed at allowing clerks across the state to avoid a last-minute flood of ballots. As of Monday, nearly 208,600 absentee ballots had been issued statewide, and more than 150,000 of them already had been returned.
Any ballots can be returned to the clerk between now and Election Day. But in-person voting ends Thursday.
People who have a last-minute emergency like hospitalization can still vote via absentee ballot after Thursday, but they must attest under oath. And there’s no deadline for registering to vote. People can register on Election Day.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
