LYMAN — Residents voted, 1865-717, to renovate the former Cousens Memorial School building to house the town offices.
The former Cousens Memorial School, 382 Goodwins Mills Road, was built in 1937 with the help of Lyman native Horace Cousens, who upon his death bequeathed the town $20,000 to be used for educational purposes. An addition was built on to the school in 1965.
The building stopped being used as a school in 2007, and though improvements have been made, the building has been vacant ever since.
The former school is three times the size of the current town hall at 11 South Waterboro Road. In addition to town offices, there will be space set aside for community use such as a possible community center.
Residents also approved, 1573-984, to allow the town to pay for the renovations by borrowing about $890,000 and using an additional $250,000 from the town’s surplus fund.
Residents approved, 1845-719, the town sell the existing town hall and use the proceeds to decrease debt from the renovation bond.
