STANDISH — The Maine Maritime Academy women’s basketball team dropped its season opener to St. Joseph’s College on Tuesday, 64-48.

The Monks jumped out to an 18-9 lead in the first quarter following an 8-0 run to close out the first 10 minutes of play. The Mariners continued to battle, cutting the deficit to seven points with 3:40 to play in the third quarter after a jump shot from Emily Melick and a layup from Mikayla Charter, but the Monks held the Mariners to seven points in the fourth quarter to hang on for the season-opening victory.

Former Mt. Ararat High School standout Kristi Willey had eight points, four rebounds and two assists in the loss.

The Mariners (0-1) host UMaine-Presque Isle on Friday at 5 p.m.
