KENNEBUNK—Violet J. Coager Black died Nov. 12, 2016 in Kennebunk, Maine.

She was the daughter of Jacob W. and Ellen J. Black Coager. She was born in Amsterdam, N.Y. Sept. 30, 1925. She grew up in Schenectady, N.Y. where she met her husband, James E. T. Black from Oklahoma, and they married on March 25, 1945 in Schenectady.

They later moved to Whitesboro, N.Y. and spent most of their lives there. She was very active in charity work. She was also very active in Tabernacle Baptist Church in Utica, N.Y., of which she was a member for 20 years.

She loved to play the piano and sing. She had a beautifully trained soprano voice and sang in many choirs and churches; she also did solo work. Music was very important to her.

She was also a beautiful artist; she worked in oil and pastels. When her husband died, she moved to Kennebunk to be close to her family. When she passed, her daughter and grandson were with her. She will be buried with her husband in Memorial Gardens, Albany, NY.

She has one daughter, Carolyn J. Black Martin, and one grandson, Jason J. Martin; three great, grandchildren; Olivia, Dawson and Drew Martin and a son-in-law, John Martin, and many cousins and friends.

Please, no flowers for her memorial service at the Kennebunk Baptist Church on Nov. 29, 2016 at 11 a.m. Coffee and a light lunch will be served after.
