BRUNSWICK

Those at or near the former Brunswick Naval Air Station may want to keep their eyes on the sky on Thursday afternoon. Two members of the Navy’s air demonstration squadron the Blue Angels will fly into Brunswick Executive Airport in an F/A-18D Hornet fighter jet at around 3 p.m. Thursday.

Blue Angel #7 Lt. Brandon Hempler of Wamego, Kansas, and Blue Angel #8 Lt. Dave Steppe of Birmingham, Alabama, will fly over the airport before landing.

Hempler and Steppe will be meeting with air show officials at the airport and with the media.

The Blue Angels arrival and news conference is not open to the general public. However, during a similar fly-in in 2014, a flyover and landing was viewed by members of the public from outside the airport at Brunswick Landing. That plane skidded off the runway and became stuck due to icy conditions. There were no injuries and no damage to the jet in that incident. The jet remained at the former base for several days until after a check by a Blue Angels crew flown in from their Florida base on a C-130 Hercules transport, “Fat Albert.”

The Angels’ Great State of Maine Air Show demonstration will be their only New England appearance in 2017.

Air show tickets are now on sale. General admission is $30/adults, $25/children, free for children under 3. Premium seats are $45 for both adults and children; children 3 and under sitting on laps do not require a ticket.

The air show last came to Brunswick in 2015, and drew 25,000 over two days.
