SANFORD — Financial stability can be somewhat elusive, particularly if your income falls into the low or moderate range.

With a new program, York County Community Action Corporation is training volunteer financial coaches to help people in those income categories find stability.

York County Community Action (YCCAC) was selected as one of five organizations nationally to participate in a pilot initiative by Points of Light to implement the Financial Opportunity Corps program.

With the support of a Financial Opportunity Corps fellow, financial coaches help participants develop strategies to reduce debt, improve credit, start saving for emergencies, access benefits and build assets for long-term financial health, YCCAC officials say.

Interested volunteers receive training on financial coaching and do not need prior experience to participate.

“We provide all the training and tools that a volunteer needs to be successful in helping families address financial goals and learn about financial resources in York County. Volunteers just need to have a desire to help,” said  Meaghan Arzberger, director of Economic Opportunity at YCCAC.

Training for financial coaches will be held from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Dec. 6 and 7 — volunteers must attend both sessions — at YCCAC in Sanford. Dinner will be provided. Interested individuals may call YCCAC to get involved at 24-5762, ext. 2933, or email [email protected].
