STANDISH — Former Brunswick High School standout Julia Champagne converted a fast-break layup with 1:10 remaining in the third quarter as St. Joseph’s took control for a 71-66 victory over Bates College on Thursday.
The Monks led by 15 points (46-31), but the Bobcats rallied as former Freeport standout Nina Davenport helped get Bates to within a point, 67-66 with 54 seconds remaining.
But, St. Joseph’s hit four of six free throws down the stretch to hold on.
Champagne had seven points, five rebounds and four assists, while Davenport led Bates with a game-high 23 points and eight boards.
Bates visits Bowdoin on Saturday, while the Monks host Colby.
