WORCESTER, Mass. — Seven area masters swimmers competed in the New England Championship recently.
Over 500 swimmers swam in the event.
Harpswell native Katrine Alcaide and Brunswick High School swim coach David Bright were double winners. Alcaide won the gold in the 50-meter butterfly and 50 freestyle for the 35- 39 age group, while Bright (60-64) captured wins in the 100 and 200 individual medleys. Bright added a fourth-place finish in the 200 backstroke.
Dale Syphers (60-64) won the 100 free and took seconds in the 50 free and 100 IM, while Mike Hurd (45-49) was tops in the 400 free, and third in both the 100 breaststroke and 200 medley. He also claimed fourth in the 100 IM.
And, Pam Torrey captured the 200 backstroke and is ranked third nationally in the event.
Ben Morse (40-44) of Brunswick was second in the 100 breaststroke and third in the 400 free. And Bob Nelson (65-69) of Arrowsic placed fourth in the 200 breaststroke among his five swims.
