A two-story garage was destroyed by fire in Bowdoin Sunday.

The fire was reported at 725 Lewis Hill Road at 5:02 p.m. The owner, Travis Donahue, was transported to the hospital with smoke inhalation. No one else was hurt.

Bowdoin Fire Chief Tom Garrepy arrived to find the gambrel-style, two-story garage with heavy fire showing from the front window of the second floor.

The first responding engine got stuck at the end of the driveway, hampering the operation. Firefighters had to extend 300 feet of water line down the driveway. By then, the fire had grown, making it too dangerous to send firefighters inside.

Garrepy said Donahue had removed some items from the garage including hazardous material such as gasoline and propane tanks. There were no vehicles in the garage and the homeowner was able to move a nearby pickup truck.

While Donahue’s home was in close proximity to the garage, it was not in danger of catching fire, Garrepy said. Central Maine Power Co. responded quickly and disconnected power to the structure.

Investigators with the state fire marshal’s office responded but were unable to determine the cause of the fire.

Bowdoinham, Richmond and Litchfield fire departments responded to help.

“Given the amount of fire and the amount of water we had, we made a pretty good stop,” Garrepy said.
