1929 – 2016

FREEPORT — Ethelyn M. Johnson passed away peacefully on the morning of December 15, 2016 at Hawthorne House in Freeport. She was born on January 14, 1929 the daughter of the late Charles “Ed” and Ruth M. (Stevens) Richardson. On June 19, 1948 she married Reginald F. Johnson. They made their home on Orr’s Island in the house they built.

Etheyln attended the Island Schoolhouse, graduating from Brunswick High School and Pierre’s School of Beauty in Portland. While raising her children she did in home hairdressing on Orr’s and Bailey Island. Later she worked as a medical secretary until her retirement. She was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Ethelyn enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, camping, traveling, bowling, and square dancing.

Ethelyn is predeceased by her husband Reginald “Reg” Johnson in 1996, mother Ruth Doughty in 1997, son Reginald “Reggie” Johnson, Jr. in 2013, and daughter-in-law Sally Brooks in 2014.

Ethelyn is survived by a son Walter M. Johnson of Orr’s Island, daughter and her husband Marjorie Louise and Carl Overlock of Wiscasset, grandchildren, Melissa Fait of Port Clyde, Brenda and her husband Jon Sawyer of Dresden, and Richard Overlock of Woolwich. Great grandchildren Cainin Griffin, Cable Fait, Cyra Fait, Margaret Sawyer, Eben Sawyer, and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside services will be held in the spring followed by a celebration of her life. In lieu of flowers donations may be make to either Orr’s & Bailey Islands Fire Department, P.O.
