This is Dick Milliard’s ninth year as a year-round basketball official. Games take the Saco resident anywhere from Kittery to Brunswick, and he officiates high school games, AAU games, summer leagues and camps. Milliard, whose day job is at Time Warner Cable, says he got involved in refereeing to “stay in the game of basketball.” He used to play for Thornton Academy and in men’s leagues, and he enjoyed watching his daughter play for Thornton. Milliard says he especially appreciates the people he meets and the relationships he’s made over the years. The only downside of refereeing, he says, is when games conflict with family events. Milliard says officials are paid per game, and travel expenses are covered.
