BIDDEFORD — The Kennebunk girls basketball team picked up a 49-33 win over host Biddeford Tuesday afternoon.

Gabby Fogg led the Rams with 20 points, including three 3-pointers. Maran Oakman added nine while Madi Lux recorded seven.

After getting off to a slow 2-2 start this season, Kennebunk has earned back-to-back road wins over Massabesic and Biddeford. Kennebunk coach Rob Sullivan was pleased to see his team pick up the pace recently.

“We had a good start against Massabesic and now we have finally come out,” said Sullivan. “We’ve been playing pretty good D all year but we haven’t been making the shots. The last two games we have been on the road and have made some shots early.”

Kennebunk quickly took the lead in the first quarter and never gave it up, outscoring Biddeford and playing strong defense.

The Rams would take a 15-6 lead into the second quarter, then extended it to 26-14 at the half.

The Rams remained hot in the third quarter, outscoring the Tigers 13-6 and putting the game out of reach. Kennebunk would then call on its bench to close out the fourth quarter as the Rams secured the 49-33 win. 

Grace Martin led the Tigers with 17 points while Brook Davis and Charli Yoho added six apiece.

Biddeford coach Katie Herbine felt that her team’s troubles began with defense, Tuesday.

“It will take five people playing defense at the same time. Right now we have four people playing defense and it’s not the same person every time, but we always have one person that misses an assignment or goes to the wrong spot,” said Herbine. “Another thing is that we lost a lot of offensive rebounds … we need all five kids on the same page and we need to rebound better in the defensive end.”

Herbine also hopes that her team can take a greater energy into its upcoming games.

“We’re just trying to find it. Our talk was about loving the game of basketball, we’re hoping the kids take that along with them. If we get every kid on this team at the same time bringing it, then we will see a different team and a different game,” said Herbine. “Our talk wasn’t about X’s and O’s, it was about bringing enthusiasm and excitement to every game.”

Sullivan was happy with the performance of his veteran players, including Fogg and Lux.

“Gabby has a lot of pressure on her because the team feeds off of her when she hits a few, they feel like they can beat anybody. Madi Lux has probably been our most consistent player … we don’t care if she scores since she is such a good defender and rebounder but the last few games she has been chipping in seven, eight points. It’s a big plus for her and a big help,” said Sullivan.

The Rams improve to 4-2 on the year, and they hope to carry this recent momentum into the middle of their schedule.

“It’s great because we have a lot of tough games on our schedule. Going into the holiday we beat Massabesic and now we got a win here. These are two important games for us to get us going,” said Sullivan.
