BRUNSWICK

Merrymeeting Adult Education is offering a tuition assistance program for their Personal Support Specialist course, beginning Jan. 17. In partnering with Bridges Home Services, a registered Personal Support Services agency who is seeking licensed caregivers to fill positions in Sagadahoc, Knox, Waldo and Lincoln counties, students will have an opportunity to take the course on a full scholarship provided through the agency.

The 50-hour course offered by Merrymeeting Adult Education will be held Tuesdays, 4-9 p.m. and run for 10 weeks. The Personal Support Specialist program is approved by the Maine Department of Health and Human services, and successful completion of the course gives graduates state certification to work in home care programs and assisted living facilities. The course also provides worthwhile information for family members assisting a loved one at home.

The partnership aims to help recruit and educate needed employees, give them appropriate training and the opportunity to easily transition from the classroom to the workplace. Bridges Home Services will be at the orientation day on January 17 in order to discuss and provide information about the scholarship process for interested participants.

The course covers topics such as: how to provide personal care and respond to emergency situations; communication skills; reporting and documentation; and issues of consumer rights while aging. Interested participants are invited to contact Merrymeeting Adult Education at (207) 729.7323 for more information or to request an application. The deadline to apply is Jan. 16, 2017.
